Building a legal career is not just about academic excellence—it's about breaking barriers and challenging the status quo. In our Scholarship Spotlight, we highlight opportunities that help aspiring lawyers achieve their dreams.

Nicole Balthazar's journey from a first-generation law student to an incoming articling student at a prestigious international law firm proves that the traditional path to legal success is ripe for disruption. Her experience shatters the myth that top-tier legal careers are reserved for those from privileged backgrounds.

By leveraging scholarships, gaining diverse practical experiences, and maintaining unwavering determination, she has carved out a unique path to success that could redefine how we view legal career trajectories.

This narrative isn't just about one student's success—it's about reimagining the entire landscape of legal education and career development.

Nicole's journey suggests that the future of law may belong to those who can navigate both academic rigors and real-world challenges, rather than those who simply excel in traditional classroom settings.

In this exclusive interview, Nicole shares her journey, challenges, and aspirations, offering valuable insights for aspiring legal professionals and established practitioners alike.

From Scholarship to Success: Overcoming Financial Barriers

For many aspiring lawyers, financial constraints can be a significant hurdle. Nicole's experience underscores the critical role of scholarships in facilitating academic success.

Scholarship Spotlight

"The scholarship helped me because it was actually helping me with my tuition," Nicole explains. "With the help of the scholarship, I was able to pay off my tuition, which is something that was pivotal.”

"The scholarship helped me because it was actually helping me with my tuition... It was a stepping stone towards my ultimate goal."

This financial support was more than just a means to an end; it was a stepping stone towards Nicole's ultimate goal. "It helped me with my goal further so that by graduating, I could then pursue being an articling student at Gowling WLG. So it was the first step before achieving the end goal."

The Path to Big Law: Ambition and Opportunity

Nicole's ambitions extend beyond graduation. She has set her sights on a career in international law—specifically with Gowling WLG, a renowned global law firm.

"I hope to embark on a great journey. I'm an incoming articling student at Gowling WLG. It's an international law firm, and one of the things that I really wanted to do is be a part of a big law firm."

This aspiration reflects a growing trend among young legal professionals to seek opportunities that offer exposure to transnational legal issues and diverse practice areas.

For Nicole, the appeal lies in the potential to gain valuable skills and insights that transcend national boundaries.

Overcoming Challenges: The First-Generation Law Student Experience

Nicole's journey to law school was not without its challenges. As a first-generation law student, she faced unique obstacles, including the need to balance academic demands with employment.

"If you're like me, if you come from a demographic or a low socioeconomic status, it's going to be very challenging, trying to figure out how to pay for things," Nicole shares.

Despite these challenges, Nicole's resilience shone through. She credits scholarships and bursaries for helping her overcome financial barriers and focus on her studies. Her experience highlights the importance of financial support systems in promoting diversity and inclusion within the legal profession.

Building a Strong Foundation: Practical Experience in Law School

Nicole's success is not solely attributed to academic achievement—she emphasizes the importance of gaining practical skills and experience during law school. Her involvement in various activities, from mock trials to legal aid clinics, provided valuable hands-on experience.

"In my first year of law school, I was able to work in the summertime at the Legal Assistance of Windsor, and that's kind of a legal aid clinic. So dealing with a lot of the same issues, specifically indigenous gender-based violence," Nicole recounts.

She also gained corporate experience working in the ESG department at TD Insurance. "At TD, I was working in the ESG department. So that was really just trying to figure out how TD stakeholders and shareholders could really contribute to ESG. And that gave me a lot of transferable skills as I moved towards my second year."

Drawing from her experiences, Nicole offers valuable advice for undergraduates considering a career in law. Her message is clear: perseverance is key.

"My biggest advice would be, ‘don't give up’. I believe the journey is not an easy one, whether it's studying for the LSA, applying for law schools, or even getting into law schools."

She encourages aspiring lawyers to remain resilient in the face of challenges, reminding them that support is available.

"Just never give up and really shoot for the stars, you know, just give it your all and know that there are individuals as well as organizations such as this one that would be championing you on to actually make it in this career."

Looking to the Future: Ambitions and Aspirations

Nicole's journey is far from over. With her sights set on a successful career at Gowling WLG, she envisions a future filled with growth and achievement.

"I see myself at my law firm, hopefully Gowling, as an associate and then eventually a partner," she shares. Her areas of interest include commercial litigation and medical and health law, reflecting the diverse opportunities available in modern legal practice.

If you're operating in Quebec, you’ll by now be familiar with Bill 96, the Quebec government’s proposed law that is expected to take effect this summer. The bill will update the Charter of French Language, otherwise known as Bill 101, ensuring that nearly all business contracts, human resources activities, public services, marketing, and just about anything else will be available in French.

The highly contentious bill has generated applause by some, and protests by others. Whatever your opinion of the new law, you must be prepared to take action before Bill 96 takes effect.

To help explain the impact of Bill 96, we recently assembled a panel of experts including Keyvan Nassiry (Nassiry Law), André de Maurivez (CIBC), Tania Da Silva (DLA Piper), and Gary Kalaci (Alexa Translations). Our panel discussed the general impact of the bill, provided recommendations for all businesses operating in Quebec, and explored the nuances of human resources and contractual law under Bill 96.
